Simple Past Tense and Past Continuous Tense

1. A: What were you doing when the accident occurred?

B: I was trying to change a light bulb that had burnt out.

2. After I found the wallet full of money, I immediately went to the police and turned it in.

3. The doctor said that Tom was too sick to go to work and that he needed to stay at home for a couple of days.

4. Sebastian arrived at Susan's house a little before 9:00 pm, but she was not there. She was studying at the library for her final examination in french.

5. Sandy is in the living room watching television. At this time yesterday, she was also watching television. That's all she ever does!

6. A: I called you last night after dinner, but you was not there. Where were you?

B: I was working out at the fitness center.  

7.When I walked into the busy office, the secretary was talking on the phone with a customer, several clerks were working busily at their desks,and two managers were discussing quietly methods to improve customer service.

PEMBAHASAN:

Simple past tense digunakan untuk menyatakan suatu kejadian di waktu tertentu di masa lampau.

Time expression: yesterday, last two days, last year, this morning, a week ago, ...etc.

Formula:

Verbal sentences:

• (+)  Subject + Verb2
• (-)   Subject + did + not + Verb1  
• (?)  Did + Subject + Verb1?

Nominal sentence:

• (+)  Subject + to be (was/were) + O/C
• (-)   Subject + to be (was/ were) + O/C  
• (?)  To be (was/ were) +Subject + O/C?

Past continuous tense digunakan untuk menyatakan bahwa suatu aksi sedang berlangsung selama waktu tertentu pada waktu lampau (past). Bentuk ini menunjukkan bahwa aksi tersebut terjadi sebelum (began before), selama (was in progress during), dan mungkin berlanjut setelah (continued after) waktu atau aksi lainnya yang terjadi pada masa lampau. The action happens before or after another action.

Time expression (keterangan waktu) yang dapat digunakan antara lain:

• at this time yesterday (pada jam ini kemarin, at this time last night  (pada jam ini semalam)
• at 3 am this afternoon (pada pukul 3 sore ini)
• all day yesterday (sepanjang hari kemarin)
• in March (di bulan Maret)

Formula:

• (+) S + was/were + present participle (-ing)
• (-) S + was/were + not + present participle (-ing)
• (?) was/were + S + present participle (-ing)
