Biodiversity is the level of variation of life forms in, given the ecosystem of species, biomes, or entire planets. Biodiversity is a measure of ecosystem health. Biodiversity is partly a function of climate. In terrestrial habitats, the tropical regions are usually rich whereas the polar regions support fewer species.
Rapid environmental changes usually lead to mass extinction s. One estimate is that less than 1% of the species present on Earth are still present.
Since life began on earth, five massive mass extinctions and minor events have caused several large and sudden drops in biodiversity. The Fanerozoic eons (the last 540 million years) are characterized by rapid growth in biodiversity through the Cambrian-blast periods in which the majority of the first multicellular phyla emerged. [2] The next 400 million years including repeated, large losses of biodiversity are classified as mass extinctions. In Carbon, the collapse of the rainforest causes huge losses from plant and animal life. [3] The Permian-Trias extinction event, 251 million years ago, is the worst; The restoration of vertebrates took 30 million years [4] The most recent, the Cretaceous-Paleogen extinction event, occurred 65 million years ago, and often attracted more attention than others because it resulted in the extinction of the dinosaurs.
The period since human emergence has shown a reduction in ongoing biodiversity and disadvantages of genetic diversity. Named after the Holocene extinction, this reduction is caused primarily by human impact, especially habitat destruction. In contrast, biodiversity impacts human health in various ways, both positively and negatively.
